Athletics - See updates on our Athletics Page

With tryouts and practices for our fall athletic teams (Cross Country, Soccer, and Basketball) underway, it truly does feel like we are back in the swing of things!  Riverside is a great community for many reasons, but it is all of those extras made possible by staff, parents and guardians, and our students, that make this a truly exceptional school.

On another note, I have received notice from the City of Calgary that they will be replacing the pedestrian crossing beacon pole (the "blinky lights") at 1st Avenue and 6 Street effective September 14, with an expected project completion time of one week.  The City advised me that the crosswalk will remain open while the beacons are offline, so I encourage students and families to be extra mindful if and when using that crossing as drivers will likely be unaware of this change.

Ravens Athletics Gear - Store Open – ordering deadline is extended to September 13!

Thank you to Mr. Price for arranging Ravens Athletics shirts for our students.  Our athletics program is a big part of our school, and a huge source of pride for us.  All Riverside students can use these shirts as uniform tops, if they would like.  You don't need to be one of our student athletes - so these shirts are available for all!

Please consider the following important information, though: all orders are final, and no refunds or exchanges can be offered; please make use of the linked size charts on the ordering page to ensure you are purchasing the correct size.  Also, please note the ordering deadline of September 9 for this first round of orders.  Forward any questions to Mr. Price at sfprice@cbe.ab.ca

Please note that we currently anticipate these orders to be fulfilled in January 2027.

Seeking Ravens Subject Matter Experts - to speak in classrooms

I am looking to create a catalogue of "Ravens Subject Matter Experts" - members of our parent and caregiver community that have expertise in different areas they might be willing to share with our students.  Students of all ages, K-9, engage willingly and respectfully with outside experts, who often lend a unique view of the curricular objectives we teach.  If you might be willing to share knowledge you have, please don't be shy – send an email to riverside@cbe.ab.ca outlining areas you might be comfortable in, and any other notes or ideas you wish to share.  Please also feel free to send any inquiries by email as well.  Joining our classes to share your knowledge is a great way to make connections with students, contribute to their success, but also to help meet the volunteer expectations all families commit to!

Brown Bagging For Kids

In the past, Riverside School students have received no-cost, healthy lunches from the Brown Bagging For Kids program, a local nonprofit group seeking to ensure no students experience hunger at school.  We did not take advantage of this program last year as there was not interest or need expressed by the community.  If your child might benefit from this program, please email riverside@cbe.ab.ca and we will discreetly note your interest to submit to the program team.

Scholastic Book Fair!

This year's book fair will take place September 21-24. The fair will run during the Meet the Teacher evening. Students will have the opportunity to purchase items throughout the week.  Book fairs are one of our foremost fundraising opportunities for our Learning Commons, in addition to being a pile of fun.  We have raised thousands of dollars for the purchase of new reading materials over the years, and when we reach a net sales amount of $6000, we receive half of the sales back as credit to purchase new books!

School Council and Parent Society meeting – September 17 at 7:00PM

Our School Council and Parent Society will be meeting for the first time this school year on Thursday evening, September 17 at 7:00PM.  Our meetings are always held on the third Thursday of the month, except for December and June, when no meetings are scheduled.

All Riverside parents and caregivers are welcome at these meetings.  We enjoy a collaborative and friendly relationship with our parent community and like seeing new faces.  Joining these meetings is a very low-risk way to learn more about our school and to get involved, but please know that attendance at these meetings does not require you to volunteer or take on specific roles.

Mr. Price will be joining this month's meeting to discuss our Physical Education and athletics program.

Thank you for your continued support,

Steve Radder, Principal
