The first month of the school year is almost behind us, and we all sure feel that it was a blur! It’s so great having the students back; we’re all very much feeling that we’re in the swing of things now. Thank you to Ms. Dixon and all of the parent volunteers who supported the Book Fair last week. I understand that Riverside families purchased over $8000 worth of items at the fair, which will mean $4000 worth of new materials for our Learning Commons. The excitement in the school for this event was palpable!

With the end of September also comes Orange Shirt Day, which we observed at Riverside today. It was inspirational to see so many of our students participate by wearing their orange shirts. Thank you to Mr. Price for organizing a group photo at the end of the day. Keep an eye on our Instagram account (cberiverside) for a post featuring the photo.

Speaking of excitement: our cross country season has come to an end, with over 60 Riverside students participating on our team. We are thankful for their enthusiasm, and for the support of the coaches who volunteered their time. Our students represented our school so well at each meet. The final standings for the season saw Riverside place 4th out of 36 teams in total. A great result for our small (but mighty) grade 6-9 community!

Finally, one last message of gratitude: a huge thank you to our students and family community for raising over $2500 in support of cancer research. Our students ran over 1700km worth of laps at our school that day; enough to follow Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope route from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Saint John, New Brunswick. Well done, Riverside!

Volunteer information

Parents, if you have not yet completed the electronic form to provide our Volunteer Coordinator permission to use your contact information to share information about field studies, please do so when

you have an opportunity. The form can be accessed by clicking here.

Secondly, it's that time again - our biggest fundraiser of the year is our casino nights. In return for volunteering our time we receive a portion of the proceeds. Usually, every casino returns around $80 000 to the Riverside Parent Society to be spent on educational items that benefit the entire school. This year's casino will be on January 19th and 20th at The Ace Casino near the airport. Our volunteer website is currently being updated and a link provided in the next weekly update with more information and to sign up for volunteering.

Parking lot request(s)

A reminder that the parking lot on the north side of 1st Avenue is not to be used for dropping off or picking up students from school each day.  Thank you for understanding that adding vehicles to the situation when students are entering and exiting the school is a safety concern.

Additionally, I have received word from the CBE that construction work at Riverside Bungalow (from a third-party lessee) is ongoing, and the project will require use of the parking lot near that building effective October 1.  This space will no longer be available for use after that date.

Construction projects at Riverside

You may have noticed construction crews working to replace exterior doors to our school both over the summer and this past month.  This work will continue until all doors have been replaced.  Additionally, contractors began the process of replacing the roof at our school yesterday morning.  This project will take some time to complete and will see many vehicles and workers at our building.  We are happy to welcome them into our community and are thankful for their work to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for our students.

Thank you, as always, for your support.
