Athletics - See updates on our Athletics Page
Our school year is now fully underway with our fall sports teams getting underway: cross country running, soccer, and basketball teams are all in various stages of their season. The enthusiasm shown by our students toward participating in these sports is awesome to see, with over 60 students competing in the first cross country meet serving as a tremendous example. I am thankful to everyone involved for their support of these programs, which are vital to creating a positive school environment, whether the students themselves, their parents or guardians for shuttling them to and from games and practices, and the incredible staff members and volunteers who give their time. Thank you!
Learning Commons book and board game drive
Ms. Dixon and our School Council have organized a book and board game drive to take place, largely over the upcoming School Conference window. The board games will be used to launch a board game club for students to attend during lunch periods.
Ms. Dixon is looking for several items in particular; her wish list will be available in the Main Office and Learning Commons over the next couple of weeks and will be sent as an attachment to a school update email. While she is very thankful for everyone’s donations, she will not be able to accept nonfiction titles older than 10 years (as students tend not to sign these items out with any regularity).
Parking lot request(s)
A reminder that the parking lot on the north side of 1st Avenue is not to be used for dropping off or picking up students from school each day. Thank you for understanding that adding vehicles to the situation when students are entering and exiting the school is a safety concern.
Additionally, I have received word from the CBE that construction work at Riverside Bungalow (from a third-party lessee) is ongoing, and the project will require use of the parking lot near that building effective October 1. This space will no longer be available for use after that date.
Construction projects at Riverside
You may have noticed construction crews working to replace exterior doors to our school both over the summer and this past month. This work will continue until all doors have been replaced. Additionally, contractors began the process of replacing the roof at our school yesterday morning. This project will take some time to complete, and will see many vehicles and workers at our building. We are happy to welcome them into our community and are thankful for their work to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for our students.
School Conferences/Meet The Teacher
We are excited to host Riverside families at our school tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning. As mentioned in a previous update, we’ll host the more traditional School Conferences in November and March of this year. This set of conferences is additional to those mandated by the CBE. Ms. Yu and I will be in the building both days and would welcome an opportunity to say hello, whether yours is a family new to Riverside or a more-experienced one!
School Council and Parent Society update
Our School Council and Parent Society will host their first meetings of the school year on Thursday, September 21, beginning after School Conferences have concluded at 7:00. All Riverside parents and guardians are welcome to join these meetings. These groups work in partnership with the school to improve outcomes at Riverside on behalf of students. We enjoy a productive and friendly partnership with our parent community.
During the “Administrator’s Update” portion of the meeting, I will share staffing news along with initial updates regarding School Development Planning for the 2023-24 school year. Our Physical Education team, led by Mr. Price, will be providing an update about teaching and learning in their classrooms as well.
Thank you all – looking forward to seeing you and connecting you at conferences this week!
