I was so impressed with the flexibility and innovative thinking on display by both students and staff at Riverside at the end of last week when a network disruption meant we did not have internet access either Thursday or Friday. Such an event can be debilitating to a school in 2023: even our printers require network access, so even “old fashioned” pen-and-paper tasks don’t always work out. What happened at Riverside? The same great stuff that always happens, a little different: walking field studies, science experiments, projects, buddies, and learning all around. That said, I know we’re all happy to have the internet back! Thank you all for your patience and understanding that we didn’t have access to our email to respond to your queries. We’ll get caught up soon!
School Conferences/Meet The Teacher
Our first round of School Conferences will take place on September 21 and 22. The session on September 21 will run from 4:00-7:00PM, while the session on the 22nd will begin at 8:00AM and end at noon.
I apologize for any confusion that might have come from my message last week. Grade 4-9 parents will not be able to book specific meeting times with their children’s teachers through MyCBE/PowerSchool. Those grades will host an open house from 5:00-7:00 on September 21. They will be reaching out to parents of students whom they need to arrange meetings with directly over the coming week. These meetings will take place between 4:00 and 5:00 on September 21 and between 8:00 and noon on September 22.
We will host ‘traditional’ conferences where parents and guardians can book individual meetings with their child’s teachers in November and March. As a staff, we decided to supplement the traditional “Meet The Teacher” evening with scheduled meetings for emergent discussions.
2023 Terry Fox Run update
Riverside School will be participating in The Terry Fox School Run for cancer research on Wednesday, September 20th. We are proud to continue the legacy of one of our country’s greatest heroes. The goal is to have as many students and staff as possible run the entire event without stopping! Family members are also welcome to attend.
Students will run on the Riverside Field from:
Elementary (K-6): 12:45-1:05
Junior High (7-9): 1:40-2:10
We hope you will join us and support this wonderful cause. Our school is also supporting cancer research through our Terry Fox School Run fundraising page at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/Ri....
Update from McCarthy Uniforms
I had a productive meeting with McCarthy Uniforms this week and have a number of exciting updates to share with our community. Please see below:
1. Effective Monday, September 18, McCarthy Uniforms will make a zippered hoodie option available for purchase through their online store. The top is made of the same material as the McCarthy Uniforms sweatshirt option already available. The cost for children’s sizes for this item is $40.99 while adult sizes are $42.99, before taxes.
2. Relating to above, the Gildan sweatshirt option currently available will no longer be available from Monday onward. The McCarthy Uniform sweatshirt option will remain available.
3. McCarthy Uniforms has begun to fulfill orders in batches every two-three weeks, which should get uniform tops in the hands of our students more quickly than anticipated.
4. This current uniform purchasing window will remain open until October 27.
School Council and Parent Society update
Our School Council and Parent Society will host their first meetings of the school year on Thursday, September 21, beginning after School Conferences have concluded at 7:00. All Riverside parents and guardians are welcome to join these meetings. These groups work in partnership with the school to improve outcomes at Riverside on behalf of students. We enjoy a productive and friendly partnership with our parent community.
During the “Administrator’s Update” portion of the meeting, I will share staffing news along with initial updates regarding School Development Planning for the 2023-24 school year. Our Physical Education team, led by Mr. Price, will be providing an update about teaching and learning in their classrooms as well.
Thank you for your partnership.
