Activity Day for all Riverside Students – December 7 in the afternoon

Non-Instruction Day (no classes for students) - December 8 

Riverside Winter Solstice celebrations and last day of classes before Winter Break – December 22

It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks left until the upcoming winter break. In the days leading up to break, we’ll be asking students to clean out their lockers and start bringing items home that are not needed at school. Encouraging your children to start this process now could help if they have many items here at the school! No one wants to be taking home a big garbage bag full of locker contents on the last day. 

 

Our work to choose a new team name for our school is underway. Our Student Advisory Council helped Ms. Yu and I comb through all of the brainstormed names provided by students through classroom activities. We looked at this work through a couple of lenses. They were: 

 

·         Does this name agree with CBE and Riverside values? 

·         Does this name represent local flora, fauna, or geography? 

·         Does this name represent something that agrees with our focus as a Science Alternative Program school? 

 

I am hopeful to be able to identify a shortlist of team names to our community before we leave for winter break. I know this is a source of great excitement and interest, so I want to make sure to do this right. We will make sure that all stakeholder groups have an opportunity to ‘have their say’ in the process once a shortlist is generated. 

 

Family Dance and Activity Day, December 7 

 

Thank you to our School Council for their work to organize and sponsor the Kindergarten-Grade 5 family dance in the evening (6:00-8:00) of December 7.  Ms. Yu and I are looking forward to the event and to connecting with Riverside families.   

 

The afternoon of December 7 will see all students in our school spending time building community, connecting with each other, and focusing on a shared sense of belonging during Activity Day.  This investment in time and building connections is something I wholeheartedly expect to lead to strong results for our school in both academic and social measures. 

 

Thank you to the staff involved for their work in designing and organizing tasks for each grade to engage in that afternoon! 

 

Upcoming McCarthy Uniform purchasing window AND 25% off sale 

 

McCarthy Uniforms reached out to let me know that they will be holding an ‘up to 25% off sale’ and wanted to know if I wanted them to open our purchasing window earlier than previously published.  I said “yes!” very quickly.  So, the purchasing window for uniform items will open again effective November 27 and will remain open until January 26.  Please see below for specific information about this: 

 

November 27-December 20 – up to 25% off uniform items from McCarthy Uniforms 

December 21-January 26 – purchasing window remains open but all items are regularly priced 

 

As I have mentioned previously, if your child needs new uniform items but you need support at the moment, please reach out to me directly and I’ll be happy to discuss with you. 

 

Annual plant fundraiser information

“It's that time of year! The Riverside Growing Smiles Christmas plant sale is happening again. We are selling a variety of beautiful plants and arrangements to raise money to support initiatives at our school. Orders are due by November 26th and will be available for pickup at the school. Orders can be placed online with credit card payment at https://riverside.growingsmile.... Please note that the cutoff is Sunday November 26 at 11:59pm. Additionally, we would need some volunteers to help with receiving and pickup. We would need about 3 volunteers to receive the orders on December 12th and about 3 or 4 volunteers on the morning and afternoon of December 13th. If parents are available please email us at parentsociety.riverside@gmail.com. Thank you for your continued support!”
