Athletics - See updates on our Athletics Page

Last Friday, students participated in their first RICK Cup/Riverside Time activities of the school year.  Each grade had tremendous activities focused on building school pride and sense of belonging at school.  Students have been divided into three houses for the school year, which will engage in friendly competition with each other over the course of the year.  We have orange Ravens, blue Ravens, and black Ravens.  The RICK Cup got off to a great start last week!  We’ve also seen field studies getting started this week, with parent volunteers joining us to support student learning at these valuable opportunities.  Thank you so much to all of those parents, guardians, grandparents and all other caregivers for investing your time in student learning!

Security of bikes inside our bike cage

Unfortunately, even at this early point in the school year, multiple bikes belonging to Riverside students have been stolen from our bike cage during the school day.  I have invested time over the course of this week to chat with different groups in the CBE, but also with our School Resource Officer (Cst. Shaw, Calgary Police) to see if there is anything further we can do as a school to help students secure their bikes.

I will be presenting my detailed findings in a report back to the school community as soon as I am able to and will also be discussing my findings and our next steps at the School Council meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 26.

In the meantime, Cst. Shaw provided a very strong recommendation for the use of U-style bike locks in our bike cage.  Alternatives such as “cord” or “coil” locks are simply not robust enough to deter theft and are very easily removed/cut using standard tools.  Cst. Shaw is also looking into programs CPS might be able to offer in support as well.

Also, on occasions when students arrive to school late, if they ride their bikes to school, I very strongly encourage them to let us know they have a bike when they check in.  Someone from the main office will be happy to open the cage to help increase the security of their bike during the school day.

Terry Fox Run information

Riverside School will be participating in The Terry Fox School Run to support cancer research on Thursday, September 19th.  We are proud to continue the legacy of one of our country’s greatest heroes. The goal is to have as many students and staff as possible RUN the entire event without stopping!  Parents are also welcome to attend.

Students will run on the Riverside Field from:

Elementary (K-6):  12:45-1:05

Junior High (7-9):   1:40-2:10

We hope you will join us and support this wonderful cause by donating to our Terry Fox School Run fundraising page at:  https://schools.terryfox.ca/RiversideSchool   Students are also encouraged to bring a “Toonie for Terry” to their homeroom teacher sometime between September 16th and September 20th If they are able.  Thank you! The future of cancer research has never looked brighter!

2024-25 Yearbook club update

Yearbook Club is looking for grade 8 and 9 students to join the lunchtime club on Thursdays. We start on Thursday Oct. 3rd in Room 204, so bring your lunch and check it out!  Students will create our school yearbook using computer design software, plus taking and editing photos.

School Conferences/”Meet The Teacher”

We are all looking forward to our first set of Learning Conferences, to be held on September 26 and 27 here at the school.  There’s many signposts in a school year, and the passing of the annual ‘Meet The Teacher’ type activity is a big one!

Division 1 (K-Grade 3) teachers will have bookable times with families both Thursday evening and Friday.  These will be 15 minutes in length.

Division 2 and 3 (Grades 4-9) teaches will host a drop-in/open house format on Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00.  They will have 15 minute, bookable time slots for families on Thursday between 4:00 and 5:00 and on Friday.

The conference manager system will open for bookings on Wednesday, September 18 at 9:00AM.  You can access this through your myCBE/PowerSchool account.

Thank you for your continued support!
