The month of December always brings interesting events to a school, and Riverside is no exception. As with most things in life, there’s some fun, some hard work, and the excitement that can come with a break from learning and the daily routine. Learning never slows down at Riverside – but students are definitely starting to wrap up some learning tasks before transitioning to new things in January.
Our Grade 9 students are in the midst of just that type of thing but on a large scale, as they had their tour at Crescent Heights High School recently. For many Riverside students, the transition to high school is the first time they’ll go to a new school since they joined us in Kindergarten, while for others, they have experienced such a transition multiple times. While most of our students move on to Crescent Heights next year, we actually send students off to over a dozen high schools each year. Thank you very much to our friends at Crescent Heights for hosting our tremendous Grade 9s.
Our boys and girls basketball teams are also winding down their seasons. Both of these groups of amazing kids won their divisional playoffs and advanced to the citywide Tournament of Champions. They played in the quarter-finals last night – the boys played valiantly, but ended up falling short of victory. The girls, however, won their game and will play tonight at 5:30 at Dr. Gordon Higgins School. Congratulations on the amazing growth and skill you all displayed during this season!

Winter Solstice celebration updates
We have celebrated Winter Solstice as one of our science-based celebrations for the last 19 years. Many teachers teach about the seasonal changes and science of what is happening with the Earth on the solstice. Many cultures throughout history have celebrated and acknowledged the changing of seasons and the Winter Solstice as an important time to slow down and heal.
As a school community, we also celebrate this changing of seasons with an annual family potluck. The potluck will occur from 11:15 – 12:00. Parents are invited to come and enjoy a lunch with their children in their classroom. Some teachers will have a sign- up set up, others will just allow everyone to bring whatever they want – this will be communicated by your homeroom teacher.
Riverside School has partnered with the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter for the past 19 years. Both online donations and cash/gift card donations will be collected. We are asking kids that participate in the spirit days to make a small donation as well. The fundraising link is here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/riverside-schools-cwes-fundraising-page-2/
If you have any questions, please feel free to email your child’s homeroom teacher.
