I feel like it might be possible to write this each month, but it is hard to believe that another month has come to an end.  While great things happen at our school each day, much of the work Ms. Yu and I have been doing for the last several weeks is with next year in mind.  We’re trying to be mindful to stop and enjoy ‘where we are at’ rather than always looking ahead.

Grade 9 students have been working diligently on various self-organized projects in Leadership class, all with the mandate to do something to improve our school.  There’s been many ideas, including our Cultural Dress Day, which will take place on Friday, May 9.  A group of students identified that such an activity might foster our sense of community and pride, and I am looking forward to the results!  There’s more projects in the works that I’ll hope to share with you in the coming weeks that I am very excited for as well.

The end of the school year also brings Provincial Achievement Tests for our Grade 6 and 9 students.  They’ll begin engaging in this work quite soon.  PATs are an important aspect of our work, both to measure student success but also to ensure that we are appropriately using our resources in helping students meet curricular objectives.

May School Council and Parent Society meeting

The final School Council and Parent Society meeting for the 2024-25 year will take place at 7:00PM in our Learning Commons.  This represents a great way to get involved in the learning that takes place at Riverside and to partner with school administration on decisions and projects that impact student learning.

During this meeting, I will share some initial notes about our progress toward the School Development Plan goals we set for this year, and ideas for where we might go next during the 2025-26 school year.  Looking forward to seeing as many Riverside parents and guardians in attendance as possible!

Riverside Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) team updates

As I have shared throughout the year, a team made up of students, staff, and parents has been working throughout the year to establish a vision for social-emotional learning at Riverside to carry us into the future.  This work is an example of the everyday commitment and investment to excellence we all make, no matter what our role, on behalf of our amazing students.

I am pleased to share that the first phase of this work: establishing a unified vision for this type of learning at our school – is now complete.  Please keep an eye out for information on how we will share this with you, and when our next meeting to begin the second phase of this work will take place.

Thank you to all those – students, staff, and family members – who shared their thoughts and ideas!
